Sedona’s sculptural red rocks, twisting junipers, and reaching ocotillos remind us that transformation is always underway. Experience the landscape through guided philosophical walks, creekside conversations, and custom group retreats.

Dialogue, Reflection & Human Flourishing

As autumn approaches, we are taking a moment to reflect on the core mission of Sedona Philosophy: creating intentional spaces for meaningful dialogue, intellectual clarity, and genuine human connection.

In a fast-moving world we remain committed to philosophical inquiry that fits into our everyday lives. We create opportunities to explore ideas that help us think clearly, live purposefully, and build deeper connections with the world around us.

Easy Walk

Relaxed to moderate hiking paired with guided dialogue.

Magical Hour Hikes

Experience the beauty of sunrise or sunset with engaging conversation.

Private & Group Customized Programs

Tailored, private philosophical walks for families, groups, or organizations.
Like a trail marker in the desert, practical philosophy provides a reference point for moving forward with intention.

Walking & Wisdom: Why Philosophy Belongs Outdoors

Long before philosophy became locked inside university lecture halls, it was practiced among friends who were walking on beautiful and inspiring pathways. In ancient Athens, Aristotle and his students gathered along the peripatos—the covered walkway of the Lyceum—thinking through life’s fundamental questions while walking side by side.

Sedona’s beautiful trails and creekside retreats have that same generative power. Natural beauty and active movement bring both clarity and creativity to our thinking. Walking in Sedona naturally slows our pace and opens our minds. The sheer scale of the landscape disrupts our daily mental routines. New ways of seeing invite new ways of thinking, and a thoughtful conversation can carry us from a moment of inspiration into a meaningful journey of discovery.

News About the Guides

Matt and Andrea Married in Delphi

While traveling in Europe this summer, Matt and Andrea got married in Delphi, a site central to the history of Western philosophy. The Delphic Oracle’s prophecy about Socrates connects the philosophical tradition of inquiry to the importance of place and the power of mystery. For Matt and Andrea, both Delphi and Sedona are places of transformative beauty where inspiring vistas and philosophical inquiry naturally complement each other.

UC Irvine Names Kent Baldner a Distinguished Humanities Alumnus for 60th Anniversary

Kent was recently recognized by his graduate school, U.C. Irvine. In a celebration of its 60th anniversary, the School of Humanities selected Kent as the student representing the 80s, and the university’s graduate programs. Kent tells us, “In 1976, I got my first apartment, and chose Philosophy as my major in college. Fifty years later, I’m still at it, offering philosophically themed tours for Sedona Philosophy. Come join us!”
Fifty years after declaring his major, Kent continues his lifelong philosophical journey outdoors with Sedona Philosophy. Come join us!

The Philosopher’s Path

The Philosopher’s Path is a feature in our newsletter that gives our readers prompts to inspire personal reflection—whether you’re hiking red rock trails, sitting quietly at home, or navigating your daily life.

You can think of this as an invitation to walk a path of inner inquiry—one that may lead to deeper understanding of yourself, others, and the world around you.

The Philosopher’s Path

Movement and Thought: allow the destination to define itself

Henry David Thoreau, in his essay “Walking,” praised what he called the art of Sauntering.  Where Aristotle’s students walked together to sharpen an argument, Thoreau walked alone to wonder and wander. Sedona’s trails hold room for both. Taking a walk with no particular problem to solve may lead to surprising solutions that arrive unbidden.

Prompt:
Choose a walk this week with no particular objective. What surfaces in your thinking when you take the problem-solving objective away?

“To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.”

– Mary Oliver
